“One road to happiness is to cultivate curiosity about everything. Not only about people but about subjects, not only about the arts but about history and foreign customs. Not only about countries and cities, but about plants and animals. Not only about lichened rocks and curious markings on the bark of trees, but about stars and atoms. Not only about your friends but about that strange labyrinth we inhabit which we call ourselves. Then, if we do that, we will never suffer a moment’s boredom.” – Gerald Brenan
PPR-great quote, and ~you~ have to tell me if this is a birch!
Fantastic photos! Such rich color!
Nice. ppr’s quotes just blow me away too.
and then we get a picture of bark that looks especially impossible. You’ve got a gift. That’s for sure.

A lovely picture and i love all the quotes in your comments!
I’ve been thinking lately that there is a camera out there waiting for me to capture beauty just like this. You’re inspiring. Thanks for your comment at my site
What wonderful shots!! Wow!
I hereby confirm: what Molly has so beautifully captured here is indeed a young paper birch, a.k.a white birch. The young trees start out with this wonderful caramel brown color and eventually mature to the white bark they are known for.
The horizontal slits in the bark are called “lenticels”. Lenticels are essentially “pores” that allow the bark to breathe.

Can you just delete that hiccup please! sigh…
thats a pretty picture of a bark, how is it you make such things so interesting… you practically give it life.
Just wanted to say hello. I’m a Canadian, too, from Halifax.
…Molly, fantastically beautiful photo! Oh, what a joy to see. …received you card today, thank you so much for your thoughtfulness. Will let you know when I post. MuSe
Words escape me. But that’s OK everybody else says what I was thinking. I know that is improper English, I’m just too tired to think.
Looks like somebody missed a spot on this one too! Beautiful pic!
