I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts
of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover
    that I had not lived.
    Henry David Thoreau

  • Oh I just love Thoreau.. and that quote balances the photo perfectly.

  • Thoreau is a favorite of mine too.    Every so often I get my copy of Walden out and read a little of it.   His time in the wood taught us many things, one of which is that solitude is a wonderful thing, but we do need each other to survive and be happy.

I like his account of the “winged cat”.

Your photo reminds me of one of the sand bars we used to frequent years ago.

    :sunny:

  • I’m sure I’ve seen you quote Thoreau before – he’s got lots of good quotes. I’ve yet to finish Walden.

That’s a beautiful photograph, you have such a well trained photographic eye.

I visited the Czech Republic on holiday – I’d just decided I would like to go. I’m sure you’d love it if you got a chance to visit.

  • Molly, it’s so peaceful with a slght feel of cold in the air.

  • It reminds me of the lake I live near.

  • This IS one of my favorite passages.

  • Taken on your recent visit?

  • Still am TOTALLY IN LOVE with the ~previous~ photo though…

    TOTALLY

  • I left the woods for the same reason.

  • and here i want the woods…

  • I love your photos ~ what a keen eye you have, and a compelling sense of balance and space, of light!

And as if that were not marvelous enough, you have exquisitely apt quotes from poets and philosophers.  Superb!

  • Absolutely a brilliant match!  As always!

    :heartbeat:,

  • This life which Mr. Thoreau describes and longs for …
is the life of sorts which I grew from
utter simplicity…where you learn from the earth and
as you give and recieve…what a revelation of life he speaks of…
    Thank you
    I *smile*

  • Oh doll, doll, doll, doll, doll!

Henry David Thoreau! I love him like I love coffee in the morning and a glass of wine in the evening!

    You, not me, have talent.

  • what gorgeousness you have here.  It’s like stopping by for a quick bite and getting a feast.

  • Absolutely amazing. Interest aricle to day about the caretaker of Mt. LeConte who spends the Winter at 6500 ft and alone.

  • I’m trying to live deliberately lately, and it feels wonderful.

  • Every day is a gift, I feel that so strongly…

  • When I go to the woods, the first think I notice is the paucity of toilet paper. But I love ‘em nonetheless!

  • I love Thoreau…

  • I love the way the treetops seem to mingle with the clouds in this shot. Just beautiful.

  • Beautiful…you do have an eye for capturing beauty.  But it sure does look cold.

  • I’m gonna go ponder that idea now.

  • A nice sense of snow..

  • RYC:  Your superb choice of quotes to accompany your pictures would seem to belie the statement, “I don’t read much.”   But ‘much’ is rather a relative term.  In any case, do pick up Plath if you have the chance - The Bell Jar and her book of poems, Ariel, are both excellent reads.  A little grim at times, but always good word pictures.

I would be curious to know (and am sure others are too) how it is you manage to find just the right quotation to accompany your work.  The marriage is always excellent.

  • Perfect quote to go with your photograph, and what a beautiful photograph.  I want to jump through my monitor and into that scene.  Away from my cubicle, my PC and telephone and into the real world.

  • Oh Molly I LOVE THIS SHOT!

  • i love Thoreauvian lingo… he had such a way about him, how he made solitude so beautiful.  i find myself reading him often ~ jack
