  • Anybody need a recipe for okra go to Lise’s Cajun Okra, I haven’t tried it yet, but it sounds delicious! Aah-yee!

  • Oh I gotta show Jackie this!!! (Second pic) She asked me the other night if we could grow our own. I said I’d look into it, said it was probably a long-season warm-climate veggie — never heard of anybody growing it here, but then you never know… We ~were~ wondering what the plant looked like — J thought perhaps something like a zucchini plant — obviously NOT!!! More like a freaking TREE!!! If anybody reading this knows anything about growing okra in Canada (Ottawa specifically – zone 5b), please let me know… Lise (Thanks Molly!!! That is so cool!!! Now I know “where my food came from”…)

    Maybe amom can save me seed from ~her~ garden? That would be ~so cool~ — to then grow it in mine — unless yours is grown from ~hybrid~ seed, then it’s no good…

  • Jackie just came home (her thing was cut short) and I showed her and she wants to know if you have a pic of the fruit on the tree, so to speak — like a close-up showing where the pod grows on the plant…?

  • sorry, no up close and personal of the okra growing! It was muddy in the yard and I didn’t want to “wade” over to the plants!

  • Oh yeah!    What is really funny is that we bought the seed for these plants from the local feed store and were told they were dwarf okra!!     Fact of the matter this looks like the old fashioned “Long Horn” okra grown around here by old timers for years.    My daddy use to say okra was so easy to grow, you could plant it UNDER the house and it would bear.    I don’t think that is really true, but I do know it bears best without fertelizer and in dry hot climate.   Too much water will just about kill it.

    Puleeze, Lise!!    Okra on pasta?   Any self respecting Cajun knows it MUST go over rice.   And white rice, not that hippie brown stuff.     Couscous???    Now there is something pronounced a little like that and I think it’s made of cornmeal mushand clabber.    The other they sell in those little boxes in the imported section of the store is surely not made to be served with this good stuff.

  • Oh dadgum I love okra ans so does my hubby–more than any other dish I could possibly make. I went over to Lise’s page and printed the recipe out.  BTW, your dad has some awesome plants!!! Take care. :)

  • For awhile I got confused, we call ‘em ladies’ fingers over here. They’re much used in our recipes – in curries, stir fry with onions, garlic and chillies etc. :)

  • I have never eaten okra that I recall. So of course I didn’t know it grows as a tree, I would of thought a vine.
