  • Pacific Dogwood

    That delicate forest flower,
With scented breath and look so like a smile,
Seems, as it issues from the shapeless mould,
An emanation of the indwelling Life,
A visible token of the upholding Love,
That are the soul of this great universe.
    William Cullen Bryant

(I don’t know what kind of flower this is. I thought it was a Dogwood, but the shape of the petals isn’t the same. Please let me know if you think you can identify it!)

  • I want to say it’s a shorthaired dogwood, but there probably isn’t such a thing. :)

  • is this a tree? bush? vine?
i was thinking dogwood too, but i think they have four petals?

  • that picture looks so refreshing because of the wetness and the deep green. did you take that nearby your home. looks pretty damp for california. oh yeah it rained recently huh?

dang you have some old cats. 17 years must be close to the limit.
that kitty in my picture is one we found in a 3-inch pipe in the back yard. the pipe was nearly vertical and it was inside upside-down crying. only 5-6 weeks old i’m guessing. we have another cat, a white one named Molly. That’s the name Petsmart gave it.

  • @DancingSun -

it’s a tree and I looked up dogwoods and you’re right, 4 petals and indentions at the end of each petal.

this was taken on the Lewis Creek trail near Yosemite. we hiked for about 3 hours in the rain and NO! 17 is not the limit! maybe 20! and what a great name for your cat

  • Oh, you  know me and researching stuff … Now I am curious as to what kind of tree it is.

  • It looks a lot like the Pacific Dogwood (Cornus nuttallii), which you can read about here:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_Dogwood

  • @soNOTcool -

cool!! i think that is it! thank you sherlock!

  • soNOTcool is an ace researcher, huzzah! It is a beautiful scene. I don’t have anything like that here, everything is brown and spikey.

  • This makes me lonesome for the woods at the Kirbyville farm.    There were dogwoods there.    I like the quote and the photo.   Love, Mom
