    There is no sudden entrance into Heaven. Slow is the ascent by the path of Love. Ella Wheeler Wilcox

  • Molly, how the hell are you?

  • One of the very first poems that I memorized, and loved, was written by Ella Wheeler Wilcox …

    Laugh, and the world laughs with you ;
    Weep, and you weep alone,
    For the sad old earth must borrow its mirth,
    But has trouble enough of its own.
    Sing, and the hills will answer ;
    Sigh, it is lost on the air.
    The echoes bound to a joyful sound,
    But are slow to voice your care.

    Rejoice, and men will seek you ;
    Grieve, and they turn and go.
    They want full measure of all your pleasure,
    But they do not need your woe.
    Be glad, and your friends are many ;
    Be sad, and you lose them all.
    There are none to decline your nectared wine,
    But alone you must drink life’s gall.

    Feast, and your halls are crowded ;
    Fast, and the world goes by.
    Succeed and give, and it helps you live,
    But no man can help you die.
    There is room in the halls of pleasure
    For a large and lordly train,
    But one by one we must all file on
    Through the narrow aisles of pain.

  • (The poem is Solitude and I was eleven.)

  • Holy cow, I wish I had gone to a college that beautiful.

  • Open a door for me….let em in to see and be warm.

  • You know how I love doors and windows.    And thanks to soNOTcool for the poem.

     …”But one by one we must all file on
    Through the narrow aisles of pain”.

    That sort of fits the thought of going through that door alone to make your way in the world.

  • Love the photo! So surreal.

  • The colors are great but suttle.

  • abandon and regain hope all that enter here…

  • I can see how you would have a different perception having been born in the south.  It has been my experience (as well as many other acquaintances and friends who come from the north or elsewhere) that we are treated like outsiders BECAUSE we weren’t born here.  Just today, a coworker was talking down about “Yankees.”  It seems both sides share the guilt of perpetuating stigmas.  To be fair, I see your point about the stigmatization and part of my bitterness stems from the fact that I’ve received my education in the south and nowhere else seems to take that seriously and I received just as good as an education here as anyone else and worked probably even harder to attain my goals given the limited opportunities and resources.  So, there you have it.  I’ll always be a Yankee to the born and bred southerner (at least where I live) and I can never go back to being a Yankee because I’ve lived here too long (because of the stigmatization you speak of).  You are also right in saying that parts of my list could be found anywhere in the U.S.  I’m sorry you were offended.  I’ll still keep subscribing to your blog and checking your photos periodically, if that’s okay.

  • You are an awesome photogrpaher.  I love the color in this photo!
